Google bombers attack Arroyo website

(with apologies for cross-posting)

ENTER THE WORDS "PEKENG pangulo" [fake president] on your Google browser, and you'll get a surprising, if mildly subversive result: The website of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Try typing "sinungaling" [liar], and the browser will direct you to Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye's profile.

The President and her trusted men have just become the latest subjects -- or victims -- of "Google bombing," a trick used to manipulate the results yielded by search engines.

An Internet-savvy group of young militants has succeeded in making Ms Arroyo's website, http://www.kgma.org/, the answer to a search for "pekeng pangulo" on popular search engines like Google or Yahoo!

The militant Youth Demanding Arroyo's Removal (Youth Dare) yesterday declared a success its online campaign to Google bomb the websites of the President, as well as those of her ardent defenders.

A query for "sira-ulo" [lunatic or fool], for instance, will take one to the official website of the Department of Justice (), presumably a slur on Secretary Raul Gonzalez.

Pimp
A search for "bugaw" [pimp], on the other hand, will show a link to the personal information page of National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales on http://www.i-site.ph/, the online databank of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism.

Finally, typing "sinungaling" on the browser will lead to Bunye's profile on the Office of the President website (http://www.op.gov.ph).

Google bombing the President's website, as well as that of her subordinates, is just one of the many ways Internet users can express their dissent against what they believe to be a fake presidency, said the group's spokesperson Raymond Palatino.

Denizens of the worldwide web have not had enough of the "Hello Garci" controversy, despite the junking of the impeachment complaint against Ms Arroyo in September, he said in a statement.

"During Edsa Dos [EDSA People Power II], we had text messaging. Now we use the blogosphere and the Internet as mechanisms to reach other people and unite in various issues," he said.

Young radicals
The Google bombing was a joint project of Youth Dare and the "young radicals" Internet blog, said Anakbayan media officer Sarah Katrina Maramag.

The group got the idea from Internet activists in the United States who linked the search words "miserable failure" to the official biography of George W. Bush on the White House website, Palatino said.

However, it was not the first Google bomb on a Filipino public figure. In April 2004, the late actor and defeated presidential contender Fernando Poe Jr. himself became the subject of a Google bomb. The search words "bangungot ng bayan" (the nation's nightmare) directed one to the Freedom, Peace and Justice Movement website, which showed Poe's picture with supporters.

A Google bomb is an attempt to influence the ranking of a given page in results returned by the Google search engine.

A page will be ranked higher on Google if the sites that link to that page all use consistent anchor text -- the text used in the link. A Google bomb is created if many sites link to a page by using a certain phrase.

If that phrase is entered on the browser, the page to which the most number of websites or blogs are linked using that phrase will appear.

Youth Dare and its member organizations are planning to come out with other creative online activities and projects, such as "Hello Garci" computer games, Palatino said.

I never thought that a Filipina woman occupying a position without mandate from the people would cling
to her rule by hook or by crook. Disgusting little imp.

guys, go get a real job! stop loitering the streets with red banners and causing terrible traffic. use your internet marketing brilliance to earn yourself more money and then go abroad. then send your dollars back to help your families. radicalism is futile if there is no support from the working class who toil for this country everyday from 9 to 5 pm and beyond.

dont get me wrong. i also want her ousted. but most of those who want her out are clowning around and it's quite obvious that they all have self-interests that they want to pursue. i will not vote for any of them come election time. i am turned off by everyone and so i remain where i am and be productive, if not for this government, for my family. i will outlive this government. :)

If I may just ask, just for the sake of debating. Who does your website condone or furthermore would like to see in power in the Philippines?

From my observation from the outside, there tends to be a lot of "wanting to remove" but yet there really hasnt been a stance in "who to replace with."

If I may also add. From my observations of the Philippines and its politics, do people there really believe that FPJ himself didnt cheat?

The problem with the Philippines is not neccesarily the "people in power," but rather how they get there. Its that same argument of "who is the legitimate president?" If FPJ was still alive and won the election, dont you think he would be going through the same thing as GMA is? In other words, if GMA did cheat in numbers--I can almost guarantee the opposition did as well.

You showed them, right. Its also proof that Anakbayan and LFS are in tune with the times as far as the use of creative forms of protest.

I am sure that most young Pinoys support you.

NPAs attacking more Globe cell sites

A SPOKESPERSON of Ayala-owned Globe Telecom admits that its non-payment of "revolutionary tax" has caused more attacks on the company's cellular network sites in the provinces.

"Obviously, our non-payment of revolutionary taxes has been the basis of these attacks. So we hope the local community can also get involved. If they see suspicious people, they should report it to the police or the military," Jones Campos, assistant vice president for public relations of Globe Telecom, said in a telephone interview.

Alleged members of the New People's Army have attacked or destroyed more than 20 cellular network sites since July 2005, Campos said.

"We still hope that the Philippine National Police and the military can help us cope with this situation. I think they are doing their best to minimize the damage. We cannot know where they will strike next," he added.

The Globe executive also noted that the damage on Globe's cellular sites has not paralyzed its services but has affected the immediate environs of the cellular sites.

Globe spends around 5 to 7 million pesos to put up one cellular site.

you guys lie. googling "sinungaling" still leads to this blog. why do you claim otherwise? how can you guys get support when you yourself are creating your own bullshit propaganda. and who in his right mind would support a site with a heading that includes images of a pair of chuck taylors, an AK-47, hitler, etc. they denote anarchy more than they denote radicalism. yes, indeed, you guys are just brats and punks with attention deficits, like one commenter accurately said.

and disabling anonymous commenting likewise just shows how immature you all are. don't you know that freedom of speech needs a provision of being able to remain anonymous? Now, any commenter of different opinion like myself will think twice about expressing him/herself for fear of getting google bombed. the funny thing is, i think at least one of your group members is also an anonymous blogger. how ironic. i guess you radicals are pretty sensitive and are easily hurt by strong words. well, i'm sorry if i hurt your feelings, mr. young radical, sir.

MAY MGA "DONT GET ME WRONG PA".

You know what? KILL Gloria, the hell. She IS the problem after all, right? Why wont you guys just do that with your "militanteng pakikibaka"? (no offense)

I am so tired of ALL this propaganda. Its wrong. People are driven with passion from sugar coated lies or overly persecuted beliefs. Believe me, as a person with TIBAK friends (heck, my boyfriend is TIBAK!) and a PRO- admin family its hard to follow just one. As of now, I am driven to find my own principles because, I am very turned off with both sides.

Tell me honestly, isnt this propaganda? NO ONE ever gets contented with who is in power. Puro pakikibaka nalang - kelan ba ito titigil?

Aye, dreadingly, we are a people not meant to be free.... We were way better off with the Spaniards. Crap.
