Merry Christmas

PCIJ features the Social Weather Stations report showing fewer Filipinos feeling happy this Christmas. Only 62 pecent of Filipinos feel so, falling from 82 percent in 2002, 77 percent in 2003, and 64 percent last year. 8 percent are sad this Christmas while 3 percent don't observe Christmas at all.

The season is surely a gloomy one for the families and victims of human rights violations and political killings of the Arroyo government.

Dec 23, Arkibong Bayan uploaded photos of the Palo Massacre (right) including clips of eyewitness testimonies and poetry. A poem by Raymond Villanueava reads:

Ang sabi ng Mabuting Salita: "Mula sa lupa tungo sa lupa."
Subalit ang mga sundalo'y hindi kinailangan
Maging literal.

Ang sabi ng mga magbubukid ng Palo: "Balik-uma! (Back to the Land!)"
Subalit ang mga sundalo'y hindi kinailangan
Maging literal.

A little hope came from the sermon of the priest in our community church in the celebration of the Christmas eve mass. He said the message of Christmas is that we should open our hearts and be not afraid to get involved. His words:

"nakialam na ang Diyos, nagkatawang-tao siya, dapat tayo ay makialam na din at ibalik ang intergidad ng ating buhay, pamilya at bayan...lalo na sa panahong may krisis ang ating lipunan, this is not the time to be uninvolved."

Makabuluhang Pasko at Isang Bagong Taon na Puno ng Pag-asa!

Tutang Bunye's response to the SWS report can be summarized as follows:

We, GMA & Co., do not believe in the SWS's report. GCDNW (Gloria Can Do No Wrong), a group of prominent men and women handpicked by GMA herself, declares that 100% of GMA's cronies are 200% happier this Christmas than last.
