Cha-cha: Dirty Dancing with Gloria

Adding to our film documentary collection is this recent CenPeg video discussing Arroyo's Charter Change posted by arkibongbayan.org.

From arkibongbayan:

The video gives an excellent brief for rejecting the GMA cha-cha proposal based on the following major points: transitory government, structure and powers, foreign ownership, human rights and accountability.

This 22-minute video on the Cha-Cha of Gloria is a production of the CWTS2 students of the UP College of Mass Communications and the 3rd summer Volunteer Integration Program (VIP) of CenPEG (Center for People Empowerment in Governance) in May 2006.

Download Cha-cha: Dirty Dancing with Gloria here.

Part 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

Click to go to Cenpeg's website. Their site is still under construction but it has a nice flash intro starring Gloria and Garci.

ABC-5 Frontlines

After State of War, ABC5 news led by Ed Lingao aired another brilliant documentary last August 23 focusing on the "people's government" run by communist revolutionaries in the countryside.

According to a report from National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), the Movie and Television Regulatory and Classification Board (MTRCB) wanted the "Frontline" maiden episode, shown last August 31, censored and demanded that it delete some frames of its episode.

This means we've got a good reason to watch and share it.

Download it: Part 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

Back(b)log

We are sorry for not being able to update for a few weeks now, our schedule have been rather tight. We are making up for it, as usual, with a round-up of what we would have blogged during the past few days if we had the time:
  • Understanding the US-Israel war on Lebanon

Carol Araullo and the ILPS statement made during the height of the conflict gave us a clear picture and shows us why the ceasefire will not put an end to the crisis.

An analysis and a sound position on the crisis must start with the realization that the US and Isreal are conducting a war of aggression against the Palestinian people and are in occupation of Palestinian territories and southern Lebanon. The US-backed Israeli occupation forces have commited crimes against thousands of Palestinian civilians throughout its history.

The portrayal of Hezbollah by CNN and other media outfits as the usual "terrorist enemy" that should be annihilated, covers up the war crimes the US-backed Israeli army has done in the course of its crusade to conquer the Middle East (which explains why Israel has no consitution; because it does not want to limit its territory) .

Read Randy David's column and be surprised to learn that the Hezbollah actually condemned the 9/11 attacks and consitute 10% of the Lebanese government.

Good thing there are the likes of George Galloway; watch this video of his passionate explanation of the issue to a reporter.

  • A 'Radical' Patricia Evangelista

Our repost of Sarah Raymundo and Bogart Jaime's essay on Pat Evangelista's column criticizing her activist UP professor continue to earn visitors and comments. Our counter shows dozens of referrals from Google search results to our blog.

We are linking to her, this time to laud her, for writing relevant columns regarding the abduction of two UP students and the human rights situation in Central Luzon for three consecutive Sundays already. Here are the links: 1, 2, 3.

  • Sarah R's must read entries.

Her entry on the continuing discussion on Justice Isagani Cruz's anti-gay column articulates a radical view on the gender equality issue. And her entry entitled Coming to Terms, should make you 'hopeful' we have revolutionary intellectuals like her.

  • Foiled airplane bombings in London...

...might have been staged. Read this Boingboing entry pointing out that the 'terrorists' did not actually pose imminent threat.

Also from boingboing comes the funny comic strip posted above.

  • 'Bebot'-ti nga

Roland Tolentino and friends criticize Apl.de.ap and the Black Eyed Peas.

State of War

I watched "State of War", ABC-5's State of the Nation Special, weeks after it has been shown in time for the president's SONA last July 24.

It's a great video documentary on how the military under Arroyo's government conducts its all-out war. It features a journalist embedded it the AFP's military operations, observing how the Special Operation Teams conducts its war in the communities, another filming its effects on the rebels, and another documenting the war's effect on the civilians and unarmed community organization leaders.

A highlight scene in the film is a "mass meeting" conducted by the AFP, "educating" people how they should better be not be supporting the NPA's and any of it's "front groups". Another is an interview of Palparan telling the reporter thet he may indeed be responsible for the killings, because of his "aggressiveness and determination."

Micheal Tan cited it in his Inquirer column. It is now being shown in campuses and groups discussing the political killings and Arroyo's all-out war policy.

During its showing, the number of extrajudicial killings shown was 709. Less than a month after, the number of killings now reaches 724.

The documentary can be downloaded here:

Justice for Ambo!

Rie Mon "Ambo" Guran, 21 years old and a 2nd-year Political Science student from the Aquinas University in Sorsogon was the latest youth victim of political killings believed to be perpetrated by the fascist Arroyo regime.

He just recently celebrated his 21st birthday last July 30. Ambo was Spokesperson for the League of Filipino Students in Bicol after unidentified military men killed Cris Hugo, a 19-year-old student from Bicol University and LFS-Bicol Chairperson last March.

Here's a poignant photo of youth martyrs Ambo and Cris during an activity in Bicol.

(An hour after Ambo's murder, Dr. Chandu Claver, Bayan Muna Chairman in Kalinga and his wife, Alice, also a Bayan Muna supporter were shot in front of St. Toni?s College by two unidentified gunmen on board a black van. Alice died while Dr. Claver is in serious condition.)

Pres. Gloria Arroyo today announced that she is giving the PNP 10 weeks to solve the unabated killings of activists and journalists. Nothing to be elated about. Not when Ms. Arroyo practically pronounced the likes of 'the Butcher' Gen. Jovito Palparan a hero during her SONA.
