LITANYA NG MGA ITLOG NA IBINATO KAY GEN. ESPERON

September 27, 2006
PRESS STATEMENT

LITANYA NG MGA ITLOG NA IBINATO KAY GEN. ESPERON

And this is not an eggsaggeration!

Bilang pagtatapos, hihiramin namin ang tanyag na mga kataga: "To egg is human." Period.

Yehey! Esperon gets eggs in the face, mud at UP

Young activists from UP hurled mud and rotten eggs at AFP Chief General Hermogenes Esperon yesterday, around 5pm after a forum in C.M Recto Hall.

Here's Malaya's coverage. Here's a report from inq7.net.

Saksi news report here.

Here are cheers from Tonyo and Ellen T.

Yehey!

Esperon gets eggs in the face, mud at UP

(UPDATE) STUDENT activists protesting political
killings in the country pelted General Hermogenes
Esperon Jr. with eggs and mud as the Armed Forces
chief of staff stepped out of a forum at the
University of the Philippines (UP) in Diliman,
Quezon City on Friday.

Esperon was hit in the face by two eggs before his
aides managed to shield him and whisk off the
general to a waiting vehicle, Anakbayan
spokesperson Sarah Maramag claimed in a phone
interview.

But Esperon's spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel
Bartolome Bacarro, said the military chief was hit
twice on the back. He said it was impossible for
Esperon to be hit in the face since the activists
hit him from behind.

"That served him right," Maramag said.

Bacarro said Esperon made light of the situation
and joked to him: "Maybe they [UP students] are
angry at me because I did not launch a coup d'etat."

But Bacarro nonetheless took a swipe at the
"attackers" saying, "They should not have shamed
UP as an institution."

The country's premiere state university, UP is a
hotbed of student activists, who have recently
called on President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to
step down amid allegations of election fraud and
corruption.

Esperon is known to be loyal to Arroyo. At a news
forum in Makati City Thursday evening, Defense
Secretary Avelino Cruz Jr. described him as the
"poster boy for no coups."

Maramag said the "assault" on Esperon was joined
by the UP Student Council and the League of
Filipino Students (LFS).

The Armed Forces chief was a guest at the forum
"Development and Conflict" at the C.M. Recto Hall
of the UP Faculty Center, Maramag said.

"We didn't miss the chance that he was there. He
had the nerve to come here [UP], especially after
September 21, the anniversary of martial law,"
Maramag said.

Esperon emerged from the forum around 5 p.m.,
unaware that the activists were waiting for him
down the hallway.

Bacarro said Esperon's security detail failed to
notice the eggs and mud, which the students hid in
their bags and behind their backs.

Militant and human rights groups accuse security
forces of the more than 750 extrajudicial killings
in the country since President Gloria
Macapagal-Arroyo came to power in 2001.

The military has consistently denied the charges,
claiming instead that the killings are the
offshoot of a supposed purge within the communist
movement.

Command Responsibility

Conrado De Quiros believes (as we have also pointed out in our last entry) that the president should be held accountable for the political killings for 'command responsibility,' as Marcos have also been charged for the same.

For sure Arroyo knows that atrocities are happening, and tolerates, even encourages it.

Since the assumptions of this policy matrix are wrong, these projects are bound
to crash in a big bang.

By 2006, we?ll end up with more corpses of collateral
victims.

Amando Doronilla explains in Proclamation 1017: Policy matrix of slaughter why the government's "crash" program is going to...well...crash.

Clearance to kill

One of the arguments of the anti-impeachment congressmen in trashing the impeachment complaint was the inclusion in the list of the more than 700 extrajudicial killings since 2001. I remember Rep. Villafuerte saying it is absurd to blame the president for the killings even if we are to assume that most of the suspects are state security forces. He said it will be hard to prove that Arroyo has indeed "masterminded" the killings.

Amado Doronilla, on the contrary, explains in his column that the president could be held accountable for killings merely due to the ambiguity of the statements she makes.

In proving the president's accountability, we, in fact, do not need to prove that she mastermided the killings, that she pulled the trigger. We do not need sophisticated evidence in order to understand that she is condoning the murders and encouraging the death squads to eliminate unarmed civilians. We just have to listen to how she praised Palparan in her SONA speech and her all-out war declaration against the "terrorist left."

We just have to listen to Boyoyongs Raul and Norberto Gonzales' constant red-baiting and destabilizer labeling to see that they have every intention to smash opposition, legal and illegal, armed and unarmed.

But then of course, as their statements may already be basis to impeach the president, it would not be enough, as it is common knowledge that there is indeed a government policy to kill civilians in the name of Oplan Bantay Laya.

The 'cover-up' mission then, of the Melo Commission and Task Force Usig, is very obvious as it ignores these simple facts.

The opposition and mass media thinks the Melo Commission is "toothless."

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised

Here's a video documentary on people power, Venezuela style.

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised shows how Venezuelan media was used by the CIA to topple an anti-US, anti-imperialist president, Hugo Chavez, and install a puppet government comprised of elite businessmen in April 2002. Chavez was forced out of power, arrested and detained.

After 48 hours, Venezuelan people in a mass rally trooped to the presidential palace, rejected the coup, and re-installed Chavez.

Update: Having trouble downloading? Send an email to Circulo Bolivariano de Filipinas (Philippines-Bolivarian Venezuela Friendship Association) bolivarian_phils_06@yahoo.com.ph, and ask for a copy.

***BitTorrent is a faster way to download large files. I have downloaded lots of great documentaries in torrent format. However, you need a client software such as this to be able to download torrents. This is recommended for those who have relatively faster internet connection. It may also work for dial-up but you might encounter problems. More info on BitTorrent here.
